Emergency Lighting Conference - April 2015

As one of the main sponsors Philip Payne were delighted with the attendance and positive feedback from the industry conference held in London on 23.04.15.

Delegates from the building design fraternity sat alongside end users with a common goal of further understanding the challenges that immerse emergency lighting compliance.
These  ranged from the non negotiable statutory requirements to the obstacles faced when trying to ensure the aesthetics of a designed area are not compromised by Em Lighting.

Philip Payne Launches in UAE

On the back of a CIBSE/SLL CPD Emergency Lighting evening and a specific brand launch event Philip Payne announced it's arrival as a compliant emergency lighting player in the complex UAE market.

Following civil defense approval, Payne invited guests to two back to back evening events; one purely educational in local Emergency lighting  requirements under the UAE code of Practice and the second a more relaxed introduction to the ethos of the company as being design friendly but technically competent and compliant.

Both events were well received and the launch also took to the road, delivering presentations to the likes of Atkins and WSP in their local offices the region   .

The day the lights went out

At the recent May Design Series show at EXCEL an unfortunately timed loss of power ensured the Philip Payne stand came into it's own.
As other exhibitors stands were plunged into darkness, the emergency lighting on display switched over to battery and sanity at least,on the Payne stand, was restored.

Royal Albert Hall

The first few Philip Payne Exit signs have been installed at ROH with a full roll out to follow in the near future

The Classic Cylinder model has been modified to ensure that the cantilever fitting does not encroach onto the corridor. A polished brass finish was selected but further supplies will be finished in RAL9010 and Old Penny Bronze dependant on location

The previous web-view of the catalogue was at best a bit clunky and at worst just too damned small to read some of the detail..

Working with our partners Method Design a completely new approach has been taken with a button on the homepage linking through to video, contents page with links and a grid view making navigation mind bendingly simple.

Individual pages can be printed or collated to print a custom selection and with options to share by email or social media the new style brochure provides brilliant opportunities for specifiers to communicate discuss or embed specifications into design documents.

A Retail Tale

• If there was any doubt that Philip Payne products represent the best in Emergency Lighting look no further that the contribution of retail sales in May’s sales figures despite the gloomy picture we hear reported on TV and in the papers.

• Payne has long been the “emergency” choice in top end retail fit outs particularly in Bond Street and the surrounding areas.

• Last month Payne products were supplied to Hugo Boss outlets in Glasgow and Reading , Dolce & Gabbana ,Jimmy Choo  in Dover Street W1 and Selfridges in Manchester .

• During May further specifications were welcomed on the books for retail and mall projects across the UK

Payne achieves Kitemark

Philip Payne has now completed the kitemarking process to ensure Civil Defence Authority compliance across the middle east region.

After recently completing some great work in the region it was decided to ensure continuing success by underpinning local compliance with the Kitemark with which of course comes the iconic BSI symbol.

Specifiers from the UK and USA continue to call for Payne product on their most prestigious  Mid-East projects  and the Kitemark will enable their specifications to be carried through with impunity.

ARC News

Two new Led products the ARCA and UNI Spot were revealed for the first time. The small dimensions and downlight feature for compatibility with BS5266-10 was of great interest along with our abstract feature board which again demonstrated a multi level building scenario with it’s Perspex avatars and fault simulation buttons it was able fully show the cost effective the SPECTO system.

It powerfully illustrated how electronics can be used to simplify emergency testing and fault reporting with centrally indicated switches at each level and an additional single central indicator that can be located adjacent to support staff at reception or control room to alert maintenance of a defect in safety critical product.

All Philip Payne products can be supplied to operate on the SPECTO platform which has also been designed, developed and is manufactured at our factory in Solihull.  Additionally all Philip Payne products are designed to include full DALI compatibility to meet the increasing demand for controllable Emergency Lighting..

We have received some very interesting feed back from ARC 2012 visitors regarding this years stand.Visitors were invited to experience emergency lighting products in use in situ . Of course by definition theses  products are dormant for most of their lives  but unwittingly they take up and can unbalance designed space.

Blackpool Dungeons install ARCA from Philip Payne.

    

Philip Payne has been chosen to supply the emergency lighting for the new Blackpool Dungeons. The Dungeons have chosen the ARCA System - a brand new product designed to British Standards and produced with the type of quality you would expect from the UKs leading emergency signage company.

Blackpool’s latest attraction – The Blackpool Dungeons - will draw thousands of visitors each year and the safety of these is of the highest priority. This is why the operators of Blackpool Pleasure Beach came to Philip Payne to supply and install the new ARCA light.

Philip Payne have installed emergency lighting systems in Madame Tussauds and The London Planetarium for the parent group of the London Dungeons and The Blackpool Dungeons and the installation of the ARCA lights in Blackpool underlines the capability of Philip Payne to adapt their products to any environment and criteria.

Portland acquisition significantly expands FW Thorpe lighting product range

FW Thorpe plc, the parent company of Philip Payne, are pleased to announce that they have acquired 100% of the issued share capital of Portland Lighting Limited, a West Midlands-based designer, manufacturer and supplier of sign lighting across a variety of sectors in the UK market.

Portland are major UK manufacturers of trough lighting and sign lighting products, producing Microlux, Signlux, and Adlux fluorescent trough lights which are all available on a next day delivery basis.
Ledlux, another leading product from Portland, is the only LED trough light in the UK that is designed with full optical control for even illumination. ARCA Joins the Family

A New emergency exit light fitting is to be launched by Philip Payne in the Summer of 2011. The High Power LED backlit recessed or surface mounted architectural signs - ARCA and ARCA Plus - are being released soon.

The ARCA light fitting is available in central battery or self contained plus Autotest and DALI versions and carries on the tradition of stylish, effective and innovative products for the Architectural community. From a design perspective, the absence of visible fixings creates a “floating Legend” style of sign and offers clean lines to match its surroundings whilst maintaining its core role as a safety and emergency feature.

The ARCA Plus comes complete with an LED downlighter for compliance to BS5266 pt 10 and maintains the design and performance levels of the entire ARCA family.

If you like low key Emergency Lighting – Join The Club

Philip Payne’s SPECTO Automatic Self Testing Emergency Lighting System has been selected for use in The Arts Club in Mayfair’s Dover Street. Discreet LED downlighters and architectural emergency signage will be linked together to centrally report any problems identified in the automatic routine testing regime (problems such as the condition of the batteries or other functional issues).

Founded by Lord Leighton and Charles Dickens in 1863, The Arts Club contains many elegant Victorian features including a marbled Entrance Hall and original staircase and is a regular haunt for many of London’s creative community. Similar in prestige to other Payne Projects such as the Royal Automobile and Army and Navy Clubs in Pall Mall, the environment at The Arts Club demands that attention be paid to all services that are installed onto such a significant and beautiful building. Usage as an entertainment venue means that on site Emergency lighting must be serviced, tested, maintained and results recorded in order to comply with current regulations - SPECTO significantly simplifies this for the Club.

Part of the Philip Payne service is to visit sites to ensure that statutory requirements are met with minimal impact on contemporary, architectural or historic environments. Probably the greenest light fitting in the world!

Known for it’s ability to navigate around architectural and design obstacles, Philip Payne were delighted to meet the finish requirements for their MF100 external final exit emergency luminaire specified by top consulting engineers K J Tait for The Dormy Clubhouse project at the Gleneagles Hotel Golf Resort.

The striking lines of the MF100 are already a firm favourite with designers as a stylish alternative to conventional emergency lighting solutions. It is normally supplied in silver or Graphite but in the RAL6005 selected by Tait to blend into this unique golfing environment, the product takes on a new dimension.

Primarily used as an emergency fitting, by utilising a 13w Citizen LED the product has found a new application in amenity lighting as perimeter and external landing lights. The RAL6005 colour selected is perfect in this application which on close inspection is also remarkably similar to the famous blazer worn by a select few top exponents of the game but would be equally at home at other lawned venues.

Special colours variants are not new for Philip Payne and many products have previously been selected for use on numerous prestigious and heritage projects.   

Philip Payne Goes Gothic

Philip Payne has always been the Architect's Choice when it comes to emergency exit lighting, and we love a challenge, so when one of Britains finest architectural treasures underwent a recent restoration, we were more than happy to come up with a creative and sympathetic solution to the demands of the task.

Strawberry Hill - Twickenham

Considered one of the finest surviving examples of Georgian Gothic architecture and interior decoration, Strawberry Hill is a Grade I-listed Building. Located in Twickenham, Strawberry Hill was Horace Walpole’s experiment in Gothic revival which to this day is much talked about by architectural scholars.

Adding to its’ impressive back catalogue, Philip Payne supplied emergency lighting to the recently completed restoration works at Strawberry Hill, following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

To ensure that the emergency fixtures (required now that the building has opened it’s doors to the public) impose as little as possible, Philip Payne introduced the notion of portable equipment. The free standing signs can be placed in position when public access is permitted and removed or relocated as required. This flexible solution ensures the signs do not permanently impose on the environment yet retain their function and adaptability.

Philip Payne lighting shines in listed building project

When a new Five Star Hotel was specified for Cheltenham, Philip Payne had a special request to fulfil.

Interior designer Nina Campbell specified special colour variants for Philip Payne Products selected for use on the Hotel De La Bere project at Ellenborough Park near Cheltenham.

Philip Payne have fashioned emergency lighting products to match external brickwork along with the striking interior design in line with English Heritage requirements.

Payne have an impressive back catalogue of heritage work and this is another project that demonstrates their ability to craft product to fit into the finest of environments.

The estate dates back to the late 15th century with the house at the centre of the current refurbishment becoming known as “Southam Delabere” in 1865 whilst under the ownership of the Earl of Ellenborough, a former Viceroy of India.

After a series of tenants the house became a private girls school in 1947 before become a hotel in 1973. This most recent project brings the building up to current emergency lighting standards with Philip Payne meeting both colour matching and special mounting requirements to ensure that the impact of these statutory products is minimised.
